Mediation Northern Ireland is pleased to announce our training calendar for the academic year 2008/09.

 

Handling Life’s Conflicts – 2 days
Available to anyone who wants to handle every day conflict better. This provides an opportunity to learn skills to deal with difficult situations more effectively.

 

Course Outline
Understanding Conflict – giving insights into its structure & progression
Self Awareness – looking at personal conflict styles & attitudes
Conflict Skills & Strategies – exploring useful approaches to conflict situations (e.g. good communication skills, mediation or negotiation)
Working at Conflict – providing good practice models for conflict planning


Entry Requirement
The Handling Life’s Conflicts course is open to all (and is a pre-requisite to undertaking the Foundation Training in Mediation)

Foundation Training in Mediation – 6 days accredited
This course introduces a basic mediation process for use in disputes between two people. Through discussion, teaching and skills practice, participants develop their ability to facilitate mediation effectively and to understand basic factors which impact on the mediation process.

Course Outline
What mediation is and how it differs from other approaches to managing or resolving conflicts
The types and functions of mediation
The formal mediation process and the skills required in using this method
Conflict analysis tools

Accreditation
Northern Ireland Open College Network Level 2 (6 credits)
Mediation Northern Ireland Certificate in Mediation

•    Handling Life’s Conflicts (or equivalent).

Group Mediation Skills – 6 days Accredited
Available to those with proven experience in mediation and designed to assist the development of skills and strategies for more complex conflict intervention particularly large group situations. Also builds strength as a “reflective practitioner” to foster further self learning based on practice.

Course Outline
This course takes place over six days and provides an opportunity for mediation practitioners to build upon good-practice and learn more advanced skills.  
Reflection on previous mediation practice
Group dynamics and systems theories
Organisational Change
Large group/complex conflict analysis tools and intervention techniques
Opportunities for skills practice and practical case studies
Good practice matters for mediators


Method of learning
These topics will be covered using a mixture of practical exercises, group discussion, input from trainers and personal reflection.  Participants will also be required to work independently on the topics between sessions using book lists, discussion and observation of real life conflict intervention situations.
   
Accreditation
• Available as 6 days OCN level 3 (6 credits)
• Mediation Northern Ireland Certificate in Group Mediation

Entrance Requirement
Foundation Training in Mediation plus two mediated cases
